of the problem is that i have asked romney and ryan repeatedly. i asked ryan on this show last sunday not -- i don't agree with you it is a $5 trillion tax cut but i said where do you make up the $5 trillion for are lowering tax rates in terms of the deductions and loopholes, how do you make it up? they reduce to tell us. independent experts say even if you took away all of the deductions it is not going to add up to $5 trillion. >> the governor said he understands he has to work with both sides of the aisle. we know right now for example in the house dave camp is working on the issue of lowering, simplifying, and even in the senate they had discussions. he said in the debate i will work with members of both sides of the aisle. looking at a simpson bowles type model. this is not new and we know that it can be done. if you go back to when it was last done of simplifying the tax code. >> simpson boles were more specific about yes, lowering the rates. >> he said he is going to work across the aisle. he is going to listen to both sides of the aisle and make sure that the three principles stay clea

on wednesday night. the question for paul ryan is can he protect in a way mitt romney's achievement and can he consolidate it and after the romney debate after the ryan debate in a sense can it confirm what romney did. i think it is a very important moment. vice president biden will try very hard to retrospecktively discredit mitt romney's victory. he will say maybe obama was off his game a little. he won't say that but implication. all lies, deception, flip flopping, big mirage that you saw for 90 minutes. biden is going to come incredibly hard at romney. ryan has to defend romney and in effect consolidate romney's gains. like coming in in the second leg of a relay race. your team is ahead and you got to hold the lead and got to, of course, attack the obama biden record but above all sort of consolidate what romney did in the first debate and not let biden undercut it. >> geraldo: so you think that joe biden has to do something the president did not. he has to take it to his opponent? >> he is totally going to do that. not to ryan but to romney. if i were biden i would take all 45 minutes of

to mitt romney's and paul ryan's budget plan, it would cost $2,000 to pay for tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, it turns medicare into a voucher system. that's one thing that mitt romney was honest about. he said that we should cut medicare benefits. embrace that and proposed it. and then to add insult to injury said, yeah, we won't be able to have medicare to continue to be a guarantee, we will have to shred that safety net to preserve it. barack obama's plan has proven we can add years of solvency, 8 years by making sure we reduce wasteful subsidies to medicare insurance companies and add years of solvency. we need to work together to continue to move forward, not have republicans rooting for failure and really transparently being disappointed that we have made progress. we have a ways to go, but we need to continue to move forward and fight for the middle class, not for the people who are doing really, really well and make sure they can do even better. >> shannon: you brought up obamacare. and medicare, but that's a plan, which outside independent bodies and fact-checking o

assume, mitt romney, hammer and tong. what does ryan have to do here in this debate? >> well, he's going to have to fight back, paul. there was once a debate called a kitchen debate. this is going to be the kitchen sink debate and joe biden is going to throw one kitchen sink after another at ryan and he is going to bring up the 47%, he will bring up the war on women, he will bring up bain capital. he'll throw all of this. >> the entire msnbc agenda. >> exactly. >> will be-- but part of the strategy there will be to pin ryan down on defense, and prevent him from talking about the things he knows best, which are medicare, taxes and financial stuff, the sort of things that romney opened up for him in that initial debate. romney unlocked paul ryan to a certain extent and now he can leverage him if ryan can get the space to talk about it in the debate. >> paul: mary. >> i think what you can expect from paul ryan, he will repeat over and over again, the 716 billion dollars in medicare cuts that obama is putting on people who are right now relying on medicare. and he will show, he will try to s

what romney's proposing. for instance $716 billion of romney would restore it to medicare. in ryan's original budget he also took it out, as the president did. i think they're going to try to say the -- the democrats are, you look at the ryan budget and that's what romney will do. >> the vice president debate will be the new headlines? >> yes and know. interesting and entertaining but the experience shows the vice presidential debate has little impact on the final vote. on the panel we talked with brit hume and he and i were both at the 1988 debate. he was one of the questioners when lloyd benson gave the fame you're no jack kennedy and everybody thought there was a big boost. we never saw a president dukakis. >> that's for sure. chris, always great to see you and have your insight and experience. thanks. >> thank you, eric. >> chris's interview with kelly ayotte and martin o'malley on "fox news sunday" some debate tips. boy, does somebody need that. debate coach brett o'donnell will give his insight. >>> there's a very rare form of meningitis claiming more lives and it spreads the

of the romney/ryan plans, which he hit on a number of times. he felt most comfortable, it seemed, defending obamacare, looking right into the camera. we didn't seem to have that moment that, sometimes debates have. but there was an exchange about the deficit and debt, talking about the simpson-bowles plan, that had an interesting back and forth. take a listen. e >> in one year, you provided $90 billion in breaks to the green energy world. now, i like green energy as well, but that's about 50 years worth of what oil & gas receives, exon and mobile this. $2.8 billion goes largely to small company, drilling operators and so forth. but if we get that tax rate down to 25%, that $2 important 8 billion is on the table. that's probably not going to survive. but don't forget, you put $ninety billion, like 50 years worth of breaks into soular and wind, to solyndra, fisker, i have a friend who said, you don't just pick the winners and losers, you pick the losers. >> he was talking about the energy plan. president obama picking losers. we will get the simpson-bowles one. let's bring in the panel for

for paul ryan. >> i think the romney team is smart and understand what his strengths are and you know very, very few weaknesses if there are any. he is a book worm and knows the numbers. but so much attention is it paid to biden's gaffe. middle class is buried and we will raise taxings and i agree we can't underestimate he is strong and can relate to the people and that will resonate with the audience and he will engage in a good debate. ryan knows he is a book worm and mart and understands he has to be strong and personalable and that's what romney did factual but personable and that's the way ryan will approach it >> i will give each much you 30 seconds and i would give you more if i had it. michael, start wu. if there is one big issue we will see out of the vice presidential debate that could be an important issue pick the issue and cand date and who has the advantage. >> i think we might see foreign policy. and libya is a clear vulner for the president and administration did not protect our people and they try to spin their way out of failure. you can see some of that. romney has a spe

and get congressman ryan to commit to positions that may be antithetical opposite to what mitt romney is saying? is he going to try to paint romney with what ryan says at this debate, on medicare, medicaid and on issues like at that? >> absolutely. what he's-- what i'm sure he'll say as well. now romney is talking a moderate game and let's look what you proposed two years ago or four years ago, for instance, ryan's plan, he also took 716 billion dollars out of medicare, and one of the main attack points na romney is making against obama and romney would put that 716 billion dollars back. but, you can be sure that biden is going to say, well in your own budget you were taking the 716 out. so he's going to try to paint, you're exactly right, peter, paint romney with some of ryan's positions not to say they were extreme, but more conservative and more hide line. >> chris, tell us what's coming up on your show today. >> we will have our own debate, alisyn. we are going to have two interesting figures, martin o'mally the governor of maryland and a lot of people think win or lose for obama,
